PGCE Professional Graduate Post Compulsory Education and Training (PCET)

OVERVIEW

This course is for people who are already working as teachers or trainers, and want to advance their career with Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status.

If you have a degree in a non-curriculum subject such as Psychology, Law, or Dance, you could be a teacher in post-16 education. Further Education institutions need teachers with specialist subject knowledge who can teach people who want to explore subjects they weren’t offered in school.

You will spend four hours a week with us and you’ll attend a summer conference, and an additional Saturday at the University of Sunderland. The conference brings together full-time pre-service and part-time in-service student teachers. This will be an excellent preparation for your first year as a qualified teacher and an induction to a professional formation year.

The Saturday on campus is your opportunity to meet with subject specialists from other colleges and explore the latest classroom management approaches and teaching initiatives.

Core modules

  • Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (20 credits)
  • Developing Theories of Teaching, Learning and Assessment (20 credits)
  • Contextualising Policy and Curriculum (20 credits)
  • Enhancing Subject Specialist Learning through Innovation and Change (20 credits)

Practice-based modules

  • Practical Teaching and Professional Development (total of 40 credits)

These courses are for people who are already working as teachers or trainers. Applicants must meet the following entry criteria to be able to join the programme:

Academic qualification Professional Graduate PCET route:

  • An honours degree, 2:2 or higher in a relevant subject
  • GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent qualifications) in Mathematics and English. If you have studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above.

Academic qualification Professional Certificate PCET route:

  • Level 3 qualification or higher, in a vocational or another specialist subject
  • GCSE grade C or above (or equivalent qualifications) in Mathematics and English. If you have studied for a GCSE which has a numerical grade then you will need to achieve a grade 4 or above.

Additional entry criteria applicable to both routes:

  • A satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check that has an issue date within 3 years at the start date of the programme
  • A completed medical pro forma
  • If you are invited for an interview, you will be asked to complete a pre-interview written task, and complete a literacy assessment.
  • 50 hours of appropriate Teaching Practice Hours each academic year

If you are unable to complete the compulsory Teaching Practice Hours, then under no circumstances (other than any negligence on the part of the University or any of its Partner FE Colleges) will the University of Sunderland or any Partner FE College be held liable for any loss you may sustain.

Many graduates from this course have gone on to more senior posts with leadership responsibilities in the institutions in which they are employed.

Graduates of this course now work in a variety of educational environments, including Further Education colleges, Sixth Form colleges, Training organisations, and Prison education.

According to our 2015 Ofsted inspection, “the training of good-quality Further Education and skills teachers enables them to make a valued contribution to the colleges and settings in which they work”.

The PCET PG/CE team are busy making preparations and plans for the start of your programme in September 2020. Covid-19 has been an unprecedented and challenging time for everyone, but we have been developing an effective approach to your programme of study, blending face to face and online teaching where appropriate.

Our experience so far has shown that this method opens new learning opportunities, enabling our learners to develop additional skills relating to planning, preparation of resources and embedding digital skills into their practical teaching placements.  Digital learning is new for many but has been utilised within the college through Microsoft Teams and will be used by the team moving forward.

We are busy identifying sessions which we can teach weekly on campus, alongside some sessions which may be delivered online using Microsoft Teams.  Online tutorials can also be arranged.  In addition, learners on programme require 4 teaching observations per year and we are currently looking at alternative methods of observation which may also be through digital technology.
