This programme is designed to give you the skills you’ll need to progress in the creative Art world. You’ll develop knowledge of the creative process through studying areas such as fashion, textiles, digital graphics, 3D studies, digital film and photography. Based in our spacious Art Studio you’ll have your own personal workspace and access to a wide range of art materials and state of the art digital resources.

Over the two years, the mandatory units of study will include:

  • Unit 1: Visual Recording and Communication
  • Unit 2: Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design
  • Unit 3: The Creative Process
  • Unit 4: Materials, Techniques and Processes in Art and Design
  • Unit 5: Developing an Art and Design Portfolio
  • Unit 6: Managing a Client Brief
  • Unit 7: Developing and Realising Creative Intentions

Optional units will allow learners to gain knowledge in areas such as fashion, textiles, graphics, photography, 3D studies and fine art.

Learners will complete a BTEC Foundation Diploma in the first year of study, successful candidates will then progress to the Extended Diploma for their second year.

The course requires students to have 4 or more GCSE grades C (4) or above, including one in art & design or a design technology based related subject. This course is also recommended for students who have completed a full Level 2 qualification in art & design, media or related subjects.

You will build up a portfolio of creative evidence during the course of the programme. Assessment will involve both externally and internally set assignments.

Successful learners have the option of a further one year of study in Art – Visual & Digital (year 2) here at South Tyneside College. Full advice and guidance on progression routes and opportunities will be offered throughout the programme.

Where learners don’t have GCSE English or maths – these will be built into their programme of study.
